To vote in the 2024 Illinois election, you must register to vote. The registration process is straightforward, and there are several ways to complete it.
Eligibility Requirements for Illinois Voter Registration:
- Be a U.S. citizen and resident of Illinois.
- Be 18 years old on or before the next election.
- Not be serving a sentence of confinement in jail or prison resulting from a conviction.
- Have resided in your election precinct at least 30 days prior to Election Day.
Online Voter Registration:
You can register to vote online through the official Illinois State Board of Elections website. The website provides tools to submit a new application or update your existing registration. You can also check your voter registration status, find your polling place, look up early voting information, find county clerk contact information and view candidate lists for the upcoming elections.
Registering to Vote by Mail or In-Person:
To register by mail or in person, you need to complete the Illinois Voter Registration Application. This form is available on the Illinois State Board of Elections website. You must submit the completed application to your County Clerk’s office or the Indiana Election Division prior to the registration deadline. You can also apply in person at the County Clerk’s Office, a County Clerk’s branch office, or any BMV license branch if you are completing a “credential transaction” (such as applying for a driver’s license, permit or identification card). You can apply in person at Public Assistance Offices if you are applying for services or assistance.
After your voter registration application is received, the County Clerk’s office will process it and determine your eligibility. If you are eligible, the county office will mail you a voter registration confirmation card. Once you receive that card, you are officially registered. If you are not eligible or if the application is incomplete, you will be notified of your ineligibility or of the need to provide additional information. If you haven’t received your voter registration card or a notice from your county within approximately 30 days, call your County Clerk’s office. You can check your voter registration and polling location at any time on the official website or by calling the election assistance hotline.
Canceling your Indiana Voter Registration:
To cancel your Indiana voter registration, you must complete a cancellation form and submit it to your County Clerk’s office. The address information for your county office is available on the Illinois State Board of Elections website.
