How to Enroll in Medicare

To enroll in Medicare, follow these three steps:

Step 1: Obtain a National Provider Identifier (NPI)

If you don’t already have one, you’ll need to obtain an NPI before enrolling in Medicare. An NPI is a unique 10-digit identification number issued to health care providers in the United States. You can apply for an NPI online through the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES). Visit the NPPES website for more information and to complete the application process. If you are unsure if you already have an NPI, you can search the NPI Registry.

Step 2: Complete the Medicare Enrollment Application

Once you have your NPI, you’ll need to complete the Medicare enrollment application through the Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System (PECOS) online enrollment system. PECOS offers video tutorials and printable resources to help you accurately complete the application. The system will guide you step-by-step and ensure the information you provide is accurate. Visit the PECOS website to complete the online application.

Step 3: Work with Your Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC)

Your MAC is the entity responsible for administering the Medicare program in your geographic area. They may require you to submit additional information during the application process. You can also contact your MAC to check on the status of your application. Find contact information for your MAC by region.

After you enroll, it’s important to keep your enrollment information up to date. You must report any changes in ownership, adverse legal actions, or practice locations within 30 days. Other changes must be reported within 90 days. If you enrolled online, you can update your information in PECOS. If you enrolled using a paper application, you will need to resubmit the application to update your information. If you need assistance during the enrollment process, contact your MAC for guidance and support.
