Auditing a Course

Auditing allows you to learn without completing assignments or exams. It’s a great way to explore new subjects or enhance existing knowledge.

  • Auditing means you are an observer or “guest” of the instructor.
  • Permission to audit is granted by the instructor and only if space is available.
  • Auditors do not participate, complete homework, or contribute to the class.
  • Instructors have sole discretion and responsibility for adding auditors to Canvas, Zoom, or any other instructional platform.
  • Your audit privileges can be revoked by the instructor at any time.
  • Auditors will not receive credit for auditing and there will be no record of enrollment or transcript of the audited course.

Current UT Austin Students

If you are a currently enrolled UT Austin student at the time the course takes place, follow these steps:

  1. Using the Class Audit Permit, speak with the instructor of the course to obtain permission to audit. Electronic signatures are acceptable.
  2. Once approved, submit the signed audit permit to your Departmental Office for departmental approval. If approved, your college will forward the approved Class Audit Permit to the Office of the Registrar – Student Academic Records for record-keeping purposes only. There is no record of enrollment or transcript for course auditors. Once you receive departmental approval, you are approved to audit the course and all further communication regarding the course is between you and the instructor.
  3. The instructor has sole discretion and responsibility for adding you to Canvas or any other web-based platform as an observer. This access will only be granted once the class has begun.
