The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Remote ID (RID) rule requires most drones operating in U.S. airspace to have RID capabilities. This allows authorities to identify who is operating a drone. RID will broadcast information about the drone in flight, such as the identity, location, and altitude of the drone and its control station via radio signal.
Drone pilots who have registered or are required to register, including those flying for recreational, business, or public safety purposes, must comply with the RID rule. DJI recommends that customers comply with the RID rule as soon as possible.
There are three ways for drone pilots to meet the identification requirements of the RID rule:
- Operate a Standard Remote ID drone: This drone will broadcast identification and location information of the drone and control station. All newly manufactured DJI drones weighing over 250 grams now have this capability. Some drones manufactured before the initial compliance deadline may also have this capability through a RID compliant firmware upgrade.
- Operate a drone with a broadcast module: Provides identification, location, and takeoff information of the drone. A broadcast module is a device that can be attached to a drone. Drone operators with a broadcast module must maintain visual line of sight with their drone at all times during flight.
- Operate (without RID equipment) at FAA-recognized identification areas (FRIAs): Sponsored by community-based organizations or educational institutions. FRIAs are the only locations where unmanned aircraft (drones and radio-controlled model aircraft) may operate without broadcasting RID message elements.
To check if your DJI Air 3 supports RID and the process for registering your DJI Air 3 with the FAA, you can consult the list of FAA-approved drone models.
If your DJI Air 3 supports RID, you need to follow these steps to register with the FAA:
- Upgrade to RID compliant firmware: Both the aircraft firmware and the DJI flight control app need to be upgraded.
- Add your drone’s RID information to the FAA Drone Registration System: You’ll need to provide the drone manufacturer, model name, and RID serial number. You can register online at the FAA DroneZone or via mail.
- Attach the RID compliance label to your drone: This label should be clear, conspicuous, and permanently affixed to the drone.
After completing these steps, you have finished the DJI Air 3 FAA registration process. Complying with the RID rule is mandatory for legally and safely operating a drone in the United States.
The DJI Air 3 does support the RID function. You need to make sure that the aircraft firmware and the flight control app have been updated to the latest version to activate this function.
You can check if the RID function is working properly by checking the RID status on the DJI flight control app, DJI Goggles, or by scanning for the RID serial number broadcast by the drone in the list of available WLAN networks.
