Registering to vote is a crucial step in exercising your civic duty and participating in the democratic process. In Michigan, the registration process is straightforward, with several options available to voters.
To determine if you’re already registered at your current address, visit mi.gov/vote and click on “Your Voter Information.” Enter your name, birth month and year, and ZIP code to check. You can also call your city or township clerk’s office for assistance.
If you’re not registered, there are several ways to register to vote in Michigan. You can register in person at any Secretary of State branch office, city, township, or county clerk’s office, state agency that provides public assistance or services to people with disabilities, Armed Forces recruiting office, or at mobile voter registration drives.
You can also register online at mi.gov/vote if you have a valid Michigan driver’s license or state ID card. Alternatively, you can print a registration application, fill it out completely, and mail it in. The application is available online at mi.gov/vote.
If you’re registering within 14 days of Election Day, you can still register and vote. Visit your city or township clerk’s office, complete a registration application, and provide proof of residency. Proof of residency can be a driver’s license, utility bill, bank statement, paycheck stub, or any other government document with your current name and address.
For those aged 16 to 17 and a half, you can pre-register so that when you turn 17 and a half, your registration will automatically become active.
When mailing your application, ensure it’s postmarked at least 15 days before Election Day and addressed to your city or township clerk. You can find your clerk’s contact information at mi.gov/vote.
You are not required to show a photo ID or proof of citizenship to register to vote. However, if you register in person, you will be asked to show photo identification. If you do not have one, you can sign a simple affidavit. If registering within 14 days of the election, you will also need to provide proof of residency.
