Texas Voter Registration: How Long Does it Take?

To register to vote in Texas, you must complete a voter registration application and return it to your county election office at least 30 days before the upcoming election. To complete the application, you can:

  • Apply in person at your county election office.
  • Download the application from the Texas Secretary of State website and mail it in.
  • Register online if you are renewing or updating your driver’s license or state identification card.

If you are not registered to vote but have an existing Texas Driver’s License or state ID card, you can register to vote online when renewing, replacing, or changing your contact information for either of these cards through the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Follow the steps on the DPS web portal to update your driver’s license information, and you will be given the option to register to vote when renewing or updating your information. This saves time and allows you to register to vote while also renewing your license.

Whether you recently moved or changed your name, you can now update all of your information on your voter registration record through our portal on Texas.gov. Click here to update your voter registration information online. Online registration processing is generally faster than mail-in registration.

If your voter registration record is in “suspended” status, it means that your county of registration has received information that you no longer reside at the address on your current voter registration record. You can use the link above to update the address or information on your voter registration record. Keeping your information updated ensures your right to vote.

NOTE: To update your voter registration, you will need your Voter Unique Identifier (VUID) to log in to the Texas.gov portal. You can find your VUID by visiting the Texas Secretary of State’s My Voter Portal, where you can enter your Name, County, Date of Birth, and ZIP Code to display your voter registration information. You need your VUID to access and manage your voter registration information online.
