Vehicle registration fees in New Jersey vary depending on the vehicle type and include license plates. New vehicles never registered are registered for four years. Leased vehicles are registered for the term of the lease. You can calculate an estimate of vehicle registration fees at NJMVC | Reg Fee Calc (state.nj.us).
Title transfer fees are $60 for standard vehicles, $85 for vehicles financed with one lien, and $110 for vehicles financed with two liens.
You will also need to pay sales tax. For assistance calculating the tax, call the New Jersey Division of Taxation at 609-984-6206.
Beginning July 1, 2024, Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) will be subject to an additional annual fee added to the existing registration fee. This surcharge applies to any vehicle certified as a ZEV pursuant to the California Air Resources Board ZEV standards for the applicable model year. The surcharge must be paid in full at the time of initial registration and at each renewal.
The initial annual fee is $250 and will increase by $10 each year for the next four years. For newly registered ZEVs, four years of surcharge fees will be due at the time of the four-year registration. For example, for a new ZEV registered between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025, the surcharge fees due at initial registration are for the years 2024, 2025, 2026, and 2027. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) is in the process of programming changes to implement the new fee. For ZEVs registered from July 1, 2024, through August 31, 2024, the NJMVC will collect the surcharge after the registration date. ZEV purchasers will receive a notice regarding the surcharge.
