Online Voter Registration: A Guide for California Voters

Registering to vote online in California is a simple and convenient process. You can complete your registration from the comfort of your own home, without having to visit a polling place. However, there are a few things you should know before you begin.

To register online, you will need your California driver’s license or identification card number, the last four digits of your social security number, and your date of birth. Your information will be provided to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to retrieve a copy of your DMV signature.

If you do not have a California driver’s license or identification card, you can still use this form to register to vote. However, you will need to take additional steps to complete your voter registration. For example, you may need to print, sign, and mail your registration.

You should also be aware of registration deadlines. If you register or re-register less than 15 days before an election, you will need to complete the Same Day Voter Registration process and request your ballot in person at your county elections office or polling location.

California conducts periodic maintenance on the online voter registration system. During maintenance periods, you can still register to vote online, but you will have to print, sign, and mail your registration. You can also return when full service is restored and register online without having to print or mail any forms.

For those participating in the Safe at Home program, do not use this online form to register or re-register to vote. Contact the Safe at Home program for further assistance.

If you are 16 or 17 years old, you can use this online registration application to pre-register to vote. You will be eligible to vote when you turn 18.

For more information about voter registration, you can visit the Secretary of State’s Frequently Asked Questions. You can also check if you are registered to vote and, if so, in which county.

If you have questions or want to report fraud, call the Secretary of State’s Voter Hotline or your county elections office.

If you need assistance in a language other than English, you can select your preferred language on the California Online Voter Registration website.

For more information on voter registration and polling places, contact your local county elections official.
