California Voter Registration: Online & Offline Options

California’s Online Voter Registration system will be temporarily unavailable for scheduled maintenance from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM on February 9, 2025.

During this time, you can still register to vote. You will need to print, sign, and mail a registration form. You can also return to register online when the system is back up without printing or mailing any forms.

To register online, you’ll need your California driver’s license or identification card number, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and your date of birth. This information will be provided to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to retrieve a copy of your DMV signature.

If you don’t have a California driver’s license or identification card, you can still use the paper form to register to vote. However, you will need to take additional steps to complete your voter registration.

If you are registering or re-registering less than 15 days before an election, you will need to complete the Same Day Voter Registration process and request your ballot in person at your county elections office or polling place. For more information on voter registration and polling locations, contact your local county elections official.

Participants in the Safe at Home program should NOT use this form to register or re-register to vote. If sharing your address could put your life in danger, you may qualify to register to vote confidentially. For more information, contact the Safe at Home program at (877) 322-5227 or visit www.sos.ca.gov/registries/safe-home/.

Check your voter registration status and county. If you are 16 or 17 years old, you can pre-register to vote using this online registration application.

If you would like to continue in a language other than English, please select your language. For more information about registering to vote, you can visit the Secretary of State’s Frequently Asked Questions section.

If you have questions or want to report fraud, call the Secretary of State’s Voter Hotline at (800) 345-VOTE (8683) or your county elections office.
