Choosing the right point-of-sale (POS) system is crucial for small businesses. An effective POS system not only manages sales but also optimizes operations, minimizes errors, and enhances customer experience. We rigorously researched and evaluated various POS systems on the market based on key criteria, including software features, hardware components, pricing, ease of use, customer support, and user satisfaction.
Over 720 hours, we conducted hands-on testing of 40 trial versions across 16 different POS systems to understand their strengths and weaknesses. In each trial, users performed tasks within the POS software and described their experience, providing valuable insights into real-world usability.
Beyond hands-on testing, we developed a detailed evaluation methodology focusing on six core categories encompassing 41 sub-criteria, allowing for a deeper analysis of each aspect.
These key evaluation categories include:
- Software Features: The capabilities of the POS system, including standard features like order taking and payment processing, as well as industry-specific tools such as KSU uploads, inventory tracking, and Kitchen Display System (KDS) software.
- Hardware: The quality of the POS hardware, including terminals and accessories like kitchen display screens, receipt printers, and barcode scanners.
- Pricing: The cost of purchasing and using the POS system, including upfront costs, transaction fees, licensing fees, subscription packages, and any additional charges.
- Ease of Use: An assessment of the software’s intuitiveness and navigation, as well as its ability to handle errors during use.
- Customer Support: The resources available to assist users with issues, including documentation, articles, or a knowledge base.
- Customer Satisfaction: Aggregated scores from customer review sites like Trustpilot and TrustRadius, providing insights into user sentiment regarding the POS provider.
In calculating the final scores, not all categories were weighted equally. For example, we prioritized industry-specific features, such as offline mode for food truck POS systems or Kitchen Display Systems (KDS) for restaurant POS systems.
