U.S. Selective Service Registration Requirements

Federal law requires men residing in the U.S., ages 18-25, to register with the Selective Service System. Georgia state law also requires Selective Service registration for males to be eligible for state aid programs, including the HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarships and Grants. Eligible colleges and universities will not award any state aid if the student does not meet the Federal Selective Service registration requirement.

Male students between the ages of 18 and 25 must have a Selective Service registration on file with GSFC for your college or university to process your state financial aid.

Will I be contacted by military recruiters after I register with the Selective Service System?

No, the U.S. has not had a draft since 1973. Registering with the Selective Service ensures a rapid expansion (in the form of a draft or lottery) of our armed forces during a national emergency.

I am an international student, do I need to register?

International students on a valid (unexpired) F or M Visa are not required to register due to their non-immigrant status. Students must submit the Selective Service Waiver Form and a copy of their valid Visa to GSFC.

Note: Students must meet all eligibility requirements.
