Federal law requires men residing in the U.S., ages 18-25, to register with the Selective Service System. Georgia state law also mandates Selective Service registration for male students to be eligible for state financial aid, including the HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarships and Grants. Eligible colleges and universities cannot disburse any state financial aid if a student has not met the Federal Selective Service registration requirement.
If you haven’t registered with the Selective Service System – Register today! You can check your registration status on the official Selective Service website.
If you are under 18, you need to register within 30 days of your 18th birthday. Failure to register will impact your state financial aid.
Male students aged 18-25 must have a Selective Service registration on file with GSFC for your college or university to process state financial aid. This means you will not receive the HOPE/Zell Miller Scholarship without being registered.
For more information regarding the Selective Service, you can visit the official Selective Service System website. The website provides comprehensive information about the registration process, requirements, and associated rights.
Registering with the Selective Service does not mean you will be drafted. The U.S. has not had a draft since 1973. Registration ensures the ability to rapidly expand the military in a national emergency.
International students on valid (unexpired) F or M visas are not required to register due to non-immigrant status. Students must submit the Selective Service exemption form and a copy of their valid visa to GSFC.
Note: Students must meet all eligibility requirements.
