Selective Service Registration: A Guide for Students

Federal law requires men residing in the U.S., ages 18-25, to register with the Selective Service System. Georgia state law also mandates Selective Service registration for male students to qualify for state financial aid programs, including the HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarships and Grants. Eligible colleges and universities cannot disburse any state financial aid if a student has not met the federal Selective Service registration requirement.

If you have not registered with the Selective Service System – Register today! You can verify your Selective Service registration status at the official Selective Service System website.

If you are under 18, you are required to register with the Selective Service within 30 days of your 18th birthday. Failure to register will affect state financial aid.

Male students between the ages of 18-25 must have their Selective Service registration in the GSFC database for your college or university to process state financial aid. If you are not registered, you will not be eligible to receive the HOPE/Zell Miller Scholarship.

For more information regarding the Selective Service, you can visit the official Selective Service System website. The website provides detailed information on the registration process, requirements, and frequently asked questions.

Registering with the Selective Service does not mean you will be contacted by military recruiters. Since 1973, the U.S. has not had a military draft. Registering with the Selective Service ensures the ability to rapidly expand the armed forces in the event of a national emergency.

International students with a valid (not expired) F or M visa are not required to register due to their non-immigrant status. Students must submit the Selective Service waiver form and a copy of their valid visa to GSFC.

Note: Students must meet all eligibility requirements.
