Vehicle registration fees in Texas vary depending on the type of vehicle.
Passenger cars and light trucks have a base registration fee of $50.75.
For heavier pickup trucks, weighing between 6,001 and 10,000 pounds, the base registration fee is $54.
Heavy vehicles, including heavy pickup trucks, RVs, and commercial trucks, have registration fees divided into seven weight classes, ranging from 6,001 pounds to 80,000 pounds. The specific registration fee will depend on the vehicle’s weight.
The registration fee for trailers and travel trailers weighing up to 6,000 pounds is $45.
Motorcycles and mopeds have a base registration fee of $30.
For all-electric vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 lbs or less, there is an annual fee of $200 at the time of registration renewal beginning September 1, 2023. Additionally, new electric vehicles issued a two-year registration to coincide with the two-year inspection will be assessed a fee of $400. All standard vehicle registration fees and related fees still apply.
When renewing your registration, your renewal notice will include the following fees: registration fees, local fees, specialty license plate fees (if applicable), inspection fees (for commercial vehicles), inspection replacement fees, emissions inspection fees, emissions inspection replacement fees (for vehicles on two-year registration), electric vehicle fees, processing and handling fees, and voluntary contributions to programs supporting Texas veterans, state parks, and the organ donor program. Fee amounts displayed on the table above are for illustrative purposes only. Actual fee amounts will vary depending on vehicle type, registration county and inspection county.
The registration fees include the base registration fee for your vehicle type and $1 for the maintenance and operation of the Insurance Verification Project (TexasSure). 100% of your base registration fees go directly to the State Highway Fund for the construction and maintenance of the state’s transportation system.
Local fees include one or more fees assessed by your county of registration. Local fees vary by county and are set by the Commissioners Court. Local fees can range from $0 to $31.50 depending on your county of registration.
All counties may assess a fee of up to $10 for the county road and bridge fund. Certain counties are authorized to assess an additional fee for transportation not to exceed $20 to fund long-term transportation projects in the county. All counties may also assess a child safety fee of up to $1.50 to promote child safety programs including health and nutrition education and school crossing protection.
Specialty license plate fees are only assessed if the vehicle being renewed has specialty license plates. Inspection replacement fees are mandated by state law to be collected at the time of vehicle registration.
Electric vehicle fees will not apply to hybrid or combination fuel type vehicles or to motorcycles, mopeds, autocycles, and neighborhood electric vehicles. Additionally, government vehicles exempt from registration and other vehicles not required to pay registration fees, including those with Disabled Veteran license plates and other military plates, will not be assessed the fee. Processing and handling fees cover the cost of processing vehicle registrations.
