To register to vote by proxy, you must get permission from the person you want to vote for before you apply.
You’ll need:
- Your National Insurance number or any other form of personal identification, such as a birth certificate.
- The address where the person you want to vote for is registered to vote.
- The contact details of the person you want to vote for.
You’ll also need to upload a photo of your signature handwritten in black ink on plain white paper. If you can’t provide a signature or your signatures don’t match, you can apply for a signature waiver within the proxy vote application service.
If you live in Northern Ireland, Scotland, or Wales, the rules for applying are different. There’s a different way to apply to vote by proxy in Northern Ireland for all elections. For Welsh Parliament, Scottish Parliament and local elections in Scotland and Wales, you need to use a paper form to apply.
If you live overseas and want to vote by proxy, apply as early as possible.
To change or update your proxy or to start voting in person, contact your electoral registration office. You must contact your electoral registration office no later than 11 working days before the election, and before 5pm on that day.
If you no longer want to vote by proxy and want to vote by post, apply to vote by post. You must apply no later than 11 working days before the election, and before 5pm on that day. If you want to vote in person, contact your electoral registration office. You must contact your electoral registration office no later than 11 working days before the election, and before 5pm on that day.
If you no longer want to vote by post and want to vote by proxy, apply to vote by proxy. You must apply no later than 11 working days before the election, and before 5pm on that day.
If you cannot apply online, download and complete a proxy vote application form. Send it to your electoral registration office.
Contact your electoral registration office if:
- you can’t print a copy of the proxy vote application form
- you can’t sign the printed form
If you miss the deadline to apply for a proxy vote before an election you can apply for an emergency proxy vote.
