You can renew your vehicle registration online up to a year before or after your expiration date. To renew online, you’ll need:
- Your license plate number.
- Your vehicle registration class.
- The business name or last name of the registrant.
- A credit or debit card without a PIN to pay the fee. The fee is shown on your renewal notice and will display on the online renewal screen.
When you renew online, you can download and print a temporary registration that is valid until the expiration date listed. Only use the temporary registration if your registration is expired or about to expire while you wait for the new registration document to arrive in the mail.
You cannot renew online for these vehicle types:
- Vehicles exempt from registration fees. You must bring documentation proving the vehicle qualifies for a state exemption to a DMV office.
- Vehicles that require proof of insurance, tax certification, or other documentation at each renewal.
- Vehicles that weigh 55,000 lbs or more.
- For-hire vehicles (including taxis, limousines, and buses).
- Semi-trailers with 6-year registrations.
- Vehicles with registrations apportioned under the International Registration Plan (IRP).
- Vehicles with ambulance, New York press, government, or official vehicle registrations.
- Rental vehicles.
- Vehicles that have been altered or stretched to increase passenger capacity.
- ‘No-Fee’ registrations. You must bring documentation to an office proving you qualify for a state exemption.
