US Selective Service Registration: A Requirement

Male students take note: Federal law requires men residing in the US between the ages of 18 and 25 to register with the Selective Service System.

Georgia state law requires Selective Service registration for males to be eligible for Georgia state financial aid programs, including the HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarship and Grant. Eligible colleges and universities cannot award any state financial aid if a student does not meet the federal Selective Service registration requirement.

Within 30 days of your 18th birthday, register for the Selective Service. Failure to do so will impact your state financial aid.

Can I receive the HOPE/Zell Miller Scholarship if I am not registered with Selective Service?

Male students between the ages of 18 and 25 must have Selective Service registration in the GSFC database for your college or university to process state financial aid.

Where can I learn more about Selective Service?

Visit the Selective Service System for more information regarding registration.

Will I be contacted by military recruiters after I register with Selective Service?

No, there has not been a draft call since 1973. Registering with Selective Service ensures a rapid expansion (in the form of a draft or lottery) of our Armed Forces during a national emergency.

I am an international student, do I need to register?

International students holding a valid (unexpired) F or M visa are not required to register due to their non-immigrant status. Students must submit a Selective Service Registration Exemption Form and a copy of their valid visa to GSFC.
