North Carolina Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin challenged the November 2024 election results, alleging some voters were ineligible. If you received a notice from the North Carolina Republican Party stating, “your ballot may have been impacted by one or more protests filed related to the 2024 general election,” it means Mr. Griffin challenged your ballot’s validity. Some voters stated they learned through other means that their name appeared on Mr. Griffin’s voter challenge list.
The State Board of Elections and county boards of elections reviewed these challenges and dismissed them in two decisions. Mr. Griffin appealed those decisions to the courts. There are currently lawsuits concerning these challenges in the North Carolina Supreme Court, Wake County Superior Court, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. The State Board cannot predict what will happen in court with these challenges.
Most challenged voters allegedly did not have a driver’s license number or the last four digits of their social security number listed in their electronic voter registration record. There are various reasons why this might occur. Many voters provide such numbers when they register, and their county board of elections then attempts to validate that number with the DMV or the Social Security Administration. But because this effort involves trying to match information across different government databases—using records created at different times in people’s lives—there are often mismatches in the data. When that happens, the number is removed from the voter registration record as not validated, and the voter is asked to provide an alternative form of ID when they vote for the first time.
Challenged voters, like all registered voters in North Carolina, are welcome to contact their county board of elections with questions about their registration record, including how to update their information.
