Cabarrus County Register of Deeds: Vital Records

The Cabarrus County Register of Deeds is responsible for recording, indexing, storing, and preserving the county’s vital records. These include birth certificates, death certificates, marriage licenses, veteran discharge papers, notary records, subdivision plats, condominium plans, and all land-related documents (deeds, deeds of trust, agreements, etc.).

Once recorded, these documents become public record and are available to the public as mandated by the NC General Statutes, the legal text governing the operation of the Cabarrus Register Of Deeds.

By law, the Register of Deeds office only serves as a repository for records. NC General Statutes prohibit the Cabarrus Register of Deeds and staff from engaging in the practice of law. Therefore, the office cannot:

  • Provide legal forms
  • Offer guidance on preparing or completing forms
  • Answer questions about the legal consequences of filed documents

You are encouraged to consult with an attorney if you have any legal questions.

The recording provision at NC General Statute 66-68 requires that “before any person or organization shall conduct business in any county in this State under an assumed name or under any name, style or designation other than the real name of the owner or owners thereof, before any limited partnership shall conduct business in any county in this State other than under the name set out in its Certificate filed with the Office of the Secretary of State, or before any corporation shall conduct business in any county other than in its corporate name, such person, organization, limited partnership or corporation shall file in the office of the register of deeds of such county a certificate.”

The Cabarrus Register of Deeds provides online record search services, making it convenient for citizens to access property information.

Only authorized persons as outlined by law are permitted to record or copy the document. Discharges that have been filed for 80 years or more are considered public record and available to anyone.
