Kansas law requires voters to present photo identification at the polls. If the photo ID has an expiration date, it must be valid at the time of voting. However, a valid photo ID does not necessarily need an expiration date.
Acceptable forms of photo identification include:
- Driver’s license or non-driver’s identification card issued by Kansas or another state
- U.S. Passport
- U.S. Military ID card
- Native American tribal ID card
- Government employee ID or badge
- Student ID card from an accredited postsecondary educational institution in Kansas
- Concealed carry handgun license issued by Kansas or another state
- Government-issued public assistance ID card
Voters 65 and older are permitted to use expired photo identification. Additionally, some exceptions to the photo ID requirement include: permanently disabled voters; military and overseas voters along with their spouses and dependents; and voters with religious objections who sign a Declaration of Religious Objection (DRO Form).
Registered voters who do not have government-issued photo identification and would like to obtain one for voting purposes may apply for a free non-driver identification card at the Kansas Department of Revenue’s Driver’s License office. To obtain the free photo ID card, individuals must complete the Certification for Free Non-Driver’s Identification Card Application (Form DE-VID1). This form is available at all driver’s license offices, all county election offices, and online.
Eligible individuals who lack proof of identity and want to obtain a free non-driver’s identification card may apply for a free Kansas birth certificate from the Kansas Office of Vital Statistics.
Eligible voters may obtain a free birth certificate from the Kansas Office of Vital Statistics.
