Carteret County Birth Certificate: How to Get a Copy

The Carteret County Register Of Deeds issues certified copies of birth certificates for births that occurred in Carteret County for a fee of $10, with some exceptions:

Adoptions: If an individual was legally adopted, their birth record will be held at North Carolina Vital Records. You can contact NC Vital Records at 919-733-3000 or visit the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services website.

Out-of-County Births: The Carteret County Register of Deeds can also provide birth certificates for individuals born in other North Carolina counties. The requestor must appear in person at the Register of Deeds office. In addition to the $10 certified copy fee, there is a $14 search fee to retrieve the certificate from another county. Fees can be paid by cash, credit/debit card, money order, or cashier’s check. Out-of-county birth certificates cannot be requested online or by mail and are only issued if the following criteria are met:

  • Born in North Carolina
  • Born in 1971 or later
  • Child was not adopted

For those born outside of North Carolina, contact the county/state where the individual was born.

Certified copies are only provided to the following individuals:

  • The person requesting a copy of their own vital record or that of their parent, spouse, sibling, grandparent, grandchild, step-parent, or step-child.
  • A person seeking to legitimately establish personal or property rights.
  • An authorized agent, attorney, or legal representative of a person described above.

The Carteret County Register of Deeds provides vital services to its citizens.

For in-person requests, you must visit the Carteret County Register of Deeds office and present a valid government-issued photo ID.

Requesting a Certified Copy

You can request a certified copy in person, by mail, or online.

In-Person Requests: To receive a certified copy of a vital record in person, you can visit our office at 302 Courthouse Square, Beaufort, NC 28516. When requesting a certified copy of a vital record at the office, you must complete a request form and present a valid government-issued photo ID.

Online Requests: To obtain birth, death, and/or marriage certificates online, please visit the Carteret County Online Vital Records Request website. Please note that there is an additional processing fee when requesting certified copies online. The Carteret County Register of Deeds online service makes requesting birth certificates more convenient.

To Request a Copy by Mail:

  • Send a written request: Must include the full name on the certificate at the time of birth, date of birth, your relationship to the person you are requesting the birth certificate for, father’s full name, mother’s full maiden name, and a contact phone number.
  • A copy of your valid government-issued photo ID.
  • A self-addressed, stamped envelope.
  • A money order or cashier’s check for $10, payable to the Carteret County Register of Deeds.

The Carteret County Register of Deeds can only provide birth certificate copies by mail for those born in Carteret County. Requesting a birth certificate copy by mail from the Carteret County Register of Deeds requires complete and accurate information.
