Car Registration Costs in Pennsylvania

Renewing your vehicle registration and/or trailer registration, in most cases, can be completed online, at any PennDOT Online Messenger service or by mail. Mailing instructions can be found on the back of the respective application forms.

To renew online, you will need your license plate number, title number, insurance information, odometer reading, a valid credit card and a printer. At the end of the transaction, you will have the opportunity to print a receipt and permanent registration credential. PennDOT will no longer mail registration cards for online renewals.

Please refer to Form MV-70S, “Schedule of Motor Vehicle Fees,” for a complete list of current renewal fees and reduced processing fees in lieu of registration for eligible senior citizens.

If you are renewing a truck/trailer registration, the registration fee will vary depending upon the registered gross weight.

The registrant’s county of residence may impose an annual fee of $5 for local use for each vehicle not exempt from registration based upon address within that county. The $5 fee is collected by PennDOT at the time a vehicle is initially registered and annually at the time the registration is renewed. This fee is based on the number of years the customer registers their vehicle. Customers who register their vehicles for multiple years will be required to pay the $5 fee annually for each year of registration. This means that a customer will pay a $10 fee for a two-year vehicle registration and a $25 fee for a five-year vehicle registration. For more information regarding local use fees, please refer to the Local Use Fee Fact Sheet – Participating Counties.
