Registering for the LEED Green Associate (LEED GA) exam is the first step toward becoming a green building professional. This process involves paying the exam fee and scheduling your exam through Prometric, USGBC’s testing partner.
To register for the LEED GA exam, visit the USGBC website at www.usgbc.org/credentials and pay the exam fee. Paying the fee registers you for the exam and starts your registration window. The registration window is valid for one year. After it expires, you must wait 90 days before re-registering. You can also request a one-year registration extension under special circumstances.
After payment, you will receive a confirmation email containing your Eligibility ID number. This number is required to schedule your exam. Visit the Prometric website at www.prometric.com/gbci and click the “Schedule My Test” button. During scheduling, you’ll be asked to provide your Eligibility ID to confirm your exam payment. Prometric will display available dates and times for you to choose from.
The LEED GA exam fee for USGBC members and full-time students is $200, while the fee for non-members is $250.
In addition to taking the LEED GA exam separately, you can opt for the combined LEED Green Associate and LEED AP (Full Exam) within a continuous 4-hour period, at a lower combined fee. However, if you do not pass both portions of the combined exam, you will not receive either credential.
You have three attempts within one year for each exam. For the LEED AP with Specialty credential, you are allowed three attempts for each specialty within the one-year registration window.
Prometric has testing centers in most major cities worldwide. You can find a testing center near you by visiting www.prometric.com/gbci and using the location finder. As of 2020, Prometric also offers online proctored exam delivery from home.
You can cancel or reschedule your exam on the Prometric website. Cancellations or reschedules made 30 days or more before your exam date are free. If made between 3 and 29 days before the exam, a $50 fee applies. You cannot reschedule after midnight of the third day before your scheduled exam date.
During the exam, you are allowed to leave your seat (with permission from the testing center staff), but the exam timer will not stop. This applies to all LEED exams, including the LEED Green Associate, LEED AP with Specialty, and the combined exam.
If you only pass the LEED Green Associate portion of the combined exam but wish to receive the LEED Green Associate credential, you must contact USGBC customer service and submit a $50 credentialing fee as well as agree to the LEED Green Associate Terms and Conditions.
