After planning, determine a registered office address for your business. You can use your home address or utilize a Commercial Registered Office Provider (CROP).

Next, check your desired business name availability on the PA Department of State’s business registration services website. If available, apply for a Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN/EIN) on the IRS website.

The PA Business One-Stop Shop’s Business Checklist provides step-by-step guidance, ensuring you’re prepared before starting the registration process. However, consulting with an attorney, accountant, and insurance agent is still recommended.

LLCs are a popular choice due to the limited liability of owners for debts and actions of the LLC. The LLC registration process closely resembles registering a sole proprietorship.

You’ll need to use the Business Checklist, check name availability, obtain a FEIN/EIN, and register the name. The LLC name registration fee is $125, slightly higher than a sole proprietorship.

Next, determine tax information as you would for a sole proprietorship. Review PA’s Retailer’s Information Guide to see if you need a sales tax license. If required, file with the PA Department of Revenue’s myPATH system. This filing is free.

Finally, check with your local government to see if you need a local business license/tax account. You can search your home/business address via the PA Business One-Stop Shop to find the appropriate contact.

To check your business registration status, log in to the PA Business One-Stop Hub, go to Business Filing Services, select My Work Queue, then choose the Business tab. You’ll receive an email notification when your order is processed, but you must log in to download documents. Store these documents securely.
