Selective Service Registration: A Guide

U.S. federal law requires men residing in the United States between the ages of 18 and 25 to register with the Selective Service System. Georgia state law also requires Selective Service registration for males to be eligible for state financial aid programs, including the HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarship and Grant. Eligible colleges and universities will not be able to award any state financial aid programs if a student does not meet the federal Selective Service registration requirement.

If you have not registered with the Selective Service System – Register today! You can check your Selective Service registration status at Selective Service Verify Registration.

If you are not yet 18, you will need to register with Selective Service within 30 days of your 18th birthday. Failure to register will impact state financial aid.

Male students between the ages of 18 and 25 must have a Selective Service registration on file with GSFC for your college or university to process state financial aid. This means you will not be able to receive the HOPE/Zell Miller Scholarship without being registered with Selective Service.

For more information regarding Selective Service, you can visit the Selective Service System. This website provides detailed information on the registration process, requirements, and frequently asked questions.

Registering with Selective Service does not mean you will be contacted by military recruiters. There has been no military draft since 1973. Registering with Selective Service ensures a rapid expansion (in the form of a draft or lottery) of our Armed Forces during a national emergency.

International students on a valid (unexpired) F or M visa are not required to register due to their non-immigrant status. Students must submit the Selective Service Exemption Form and a copy of their valid Visa to GSFC. Note: Students must meet all eligibility requirements.
