In addition to obituaries, the Iola Public Library houses a wealth of historical documents, newspaper articles, census information, and other resources to aid in genealogical research.
The County Clerk’s Office also provides land record searches for a fee of $20 per hour, billed in 15-minute increments. You must agree to payment before a search begins via email or mail. Copies are $0.50 each. An invoice for the search performed and copies will be emailed or mailed before any information is sent to you. Search fees are still due even if no information is found.
Searches are performed on Grantor and Grantee index books by the name you provide. Real estate documents that may be found include deeds, mortgages, miscellaneous documents, and oil and gas leases.
Some older rural and small-town school records are also on file. To search these records, please provide: the individual’s full name, the school attended, and a 10-year time frame of attendance.
You can visit the office Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Staff will guide you on how to search for records. Please call in advance at 620-365-1412 as the office may be closed for lunch or holidays. Photography requires permission from the Clerk’s Office.
