The Mecklenburg County Register of Deeds announces the following 2025 office closures:

Per North Carolina GS 132-1.10(g): Any person who prepares or submits a document for recording or filing in the public record shall not include a social security number, employer tax identification number, driver’s license number, state identification card number, passport number, checking account number, savings account number, credit card or debit card number, or personal identification number (PIN) or password in the document, unless expressly required by law or court order, applied by the State Registrar for vital records or redacted so that no more than the last four digits of the identifying number are included.

Any person has the right to request the register of deeds to redact from the image or copy of the official record posted on the register of deeds’ website or on a website used by the register of deeds to display records to the public, any social security number, employer tax identification number, driver’s license number, state identification card number, passport number, checking account number, savings account number, credit card or debit card number, or personal identification number (PIN) or password contained in the official record. The request shall be made in writing and submitted by mail, fax, or electronic transmission, or delivered in person to the register of deeds. The request shall specify the personal information to be redacted, information identifying the document containing the personal information, and uniquely identify the location within the document containing the social security number, employer tax identification number, driver’s license number, state identification card number, passport number, checking account number, savings account number, credit card or debit card number, or personal identification number (PIN) or password to be redacted. No fee shall be charged for redaction pursuant to such a request. Any person requesting redaction who does not have proper authority shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine not to exceed five hundred dollars ($500.00) for each offense.
