Wayne County Register of Deeds: Public Record Access

The Wayne County Register of Deeds is responsible for maintaining the county’s public records, including all real estate documents, deeds of trust, cancellation/satisfaction documents, powers of attorney, assumed business names, separation agreements, and many other business-related documents. The Register of Deeds is also responsible for issuing marriage licenses, administering the notary public oaths, and recording military discharges in the form of DD-214s. The Register of Deeds must adhere to laws as set forth by the North Carolina General Assembly as well as state regulations that govern the day-to-day operations of the office.

Plat maps and electronic records are presented for registration, please check with the Planning Department if you have questions regarding Plat Maps and signatures for Plat Maps. Wayne County is now e-recording ready for Plat Maps.

The Register of Deeds office serves only as a recording office. North Carolina General Statutes prohibit the Register of Deeds or staff from practicing law. We cannot provide legal forms, instructions on preparing or completing forms, or answer questions regarding the legal effect of filed documents. We encourage you to consult with an attorney if you have any legal questions.

For Funeral Homes, we have started a new process:

  • Email your request to [email protected], a staff member will pick the request, fill the order and call the Funeral Home when ready.
  • Traditionally you may still walk in and place your request (or wait).
  • You may also fax your request to: 919-731-1441.

Wills must be filed with the Clerk of Court’s Office. Please contact the Clerk’s office for hours of operation. 919-722-6100.
