Find Wheeling News Register Obituaries Online

The Ohio County Public Library (OCPL) is digitizing microfilm versions of the Wheeling News-Register and The Intelligencer newspapers. All issues of the Intelligencer from 1852 to the present are online. Digitization of the News-Register is ongoing, with issues from 1863 to 1976, plus many Sunday issues, available online. More issues will be added as microfilm processing continues.

You can search Wheeling News Register Obituaries online through the OCPL digital archives. This is a valuable resource for family history research and finding information about the deceased in Wheeling, West Virginia.

Digitized newspapers from Wheeling prior to 1922 are also available through the Library of Congress’s Chronicling America website.

The Wheeling Daily Intelligencer is available through Chronicling America from 1852-1922 and the Wheeling Daily Register from 1863-1888. To find the Wheeling papers, click on the “Advanced Search” tab and select by state or by newspaper title. This is another way to search for Wheeling News Register obituaries from earlier years.

In addition, NewspaperARCHIVE Library Edition, the world’s largest online newspaper archive with over 400 years of family history, local events and world news, is also available at the OCPL Library. Many West Virginia newspapers are available, including publications from Beckley, Bluefield, Charlestown, Charleston, Clarksburg, Fayetteville, Martinsburg, Morgantown, Shepherdstown, and Weirton. Selected dates are available for the Wheeling Daily Intelligencer (1852-1865) and the Wheeling Intelligencer (1911-1913). Note that access to NewspaperARCHIVE is only available on computers inside the Library. This may be an option for finding Wheeling News Register obituaries within a specific time frame.
