Wheeling WV History: Explore Local Newspaper Archives Online

The Ohio County Public Library has digitized microfilm versions of two local newspapers, the Wheeling News-Register and The Intelligencer, providing a vast online repository of Wheeling, West Virginia history.

The complete run of The Intelligencer from 1852 to the present is available online. Digitization of the Wheeling News-Register is ongoing, with the years 1863 to 1989 and 2010 to 2024 currently accessible, including many Sunday editions. The library will continue to add more issues in the future.

You can access this digital archive through the website https://ohiocountywv.historyarchives.online/home. The new interface is mobile-friendly and easier to use, featuring a robust search engine that allows you to easily find information within more than 2.5 million images dating back to 1852.

For those interested in Wheeling history before 1922, the Library of Congress’s Chronicling America website also offers digitized newspaper issues.

In addition, the Ohio County Public Library provides free access to The New York Times, New York Times Cooking, NYTimes Games, and The Wall Street Journal for its patrons. These are valuable resources for staying informed, learning life skills, and entertainment.

The Wall Street Journal allows access for 3 days after registration. After that, you can log in again with the same username and password to continue using it.

Chronicling America is a partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress, providing a historical American newspaper archive from 1789 to 1924. Here, you can find issues of the Wheeling Daily Intelligencer (1852-1922), Wheeling Daily Register (1863-1897), Wheeling Repository (1807-1808), Virginia Statesman (1928-1929), Wheeling Compiler (1829-1830), and Wheeling Times and Advertiser (1840-1848). To search for Wheeling newspapers, use the “Advanced Search” feature and select by state or newspaper title.
