Registering an Emotional Support Animal: Understanding the Requirements

Many people confuse Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) with Service Dogs. Service Dogs are trained to perform specific tasks for individuals with disabilities, while ESAs provide emotional comfort through their presence. Laws clearly define public access rights for Service Dogs, but these do not apply to ESAs.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), only Service Dogs are permitted in public places. ESAs are not granted this right. It is a misconception that a doctor’s note grants an ESA access to public accommodations. This is not legally accurate.

Untrained ESAs can cause disruptions in public spaces like hospitals, impacting the work of legitimate Service Dogs and the safety of others.

Healthcare professionals, especially in veterans’ healthcare facilities, need training on the differences between Service Dogs and ESAs. They must understand relevant laws and correctly advise patients on the rights and responsibilities of ESA ownership.

Service Dogs undergo rigorous training to meet high standards. They must perform specific tasks to assist a person with a disability. Examples include guiding the visually impaired, alerting the hearing impaired, or providing mobility assistance.

Veterans needing a Service Dog should thoroughly research training regulations and standards. They can train their dog or seek professional Service Dog training organizations. Skill assessment is crucial to ensure the dog meets requirements and performs effectively.

Reputable resources on Service Dogs and ESAs include Assistance Dogs International (ADI) and the American Kennel Club (AKC). Veterans and healthcare workers should consult these sources for accurate information. Beware of fraudulent “Service Dog Certification” websites. Service Dog certification is not required by law, except when veterans receive a Service Dog through the Department of Veterans Affairs.
